Will an above-ground safe room really survive a direct hit?

A safe room built and installed to FEMA P-361 is designed against a 250 mph wind speed — above the threshold for EF5 — and its wall, door and shutter components are tested by firing debris at them under the methods described in FEMA 361 and ICC-500. The design intent under FEMA P-361 is described as near-absolute protection. What matters is that the specific unit you buy has that testing behind it and is anchored correctly.

How much floor space does one take?

Occupancy for a short-duration windstorm shelter works out at roughly three to five square feet per person depending on the occupancy type, so a four-person safe room is genuinely small — commonly in the range of a large closet. Most central Arkansas installs go in a garage corner, where the footprint costs you storage rather than living space.

Can it be anchored to any slab?

Not automatically. The installer checks slab thickness, reinforcing and condition, and looks for post-tension cables or utilities running through the pour before drilling.
